Chapter Seven

After only a couple of hours sleep, Logan roused Kate at dawn. They’d have to get a move on if they wanted to make it to the Mississippi border and into Texan-occupied Louisiana by tomorrow morning.

The rainstorm had replenished the water they’d drunk last night, Logan had left the thermos outside the shelter, the lid off. They ate a simple breakfast, portioning out the dried fruit and tuna jerky Cookie had packed for their “day trip”.

Using the compass on his watch, Logan calculated their course. They’d head inland, toward the patches of woodlands and farms, to avoid Reformer patrols.

The dewy morning proved chilly and though she didn’t complain, he noticed Kate shivering. He stripped off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.

“What about you?” she asked.

“I’m fine.”

And for the most part, he was. Once his body warmed up from the brisk pace.

“The Louisiana border is about a hundred ten miles away. We’ll lose a bit of time heading inland, but if we’re lucky—”

“That’s a thirty-six-hour hike.”

“But if we’re lucky,” he grasped her hand, “we’ll hitch a ride with some migrant workers.”

Her eyes searched his. He knew she wanted reassurance. It was going to be a long journey, but he was confident he would get them home. She just had to keep the faith. But lately she didn’t seem to have much faith in him at all.

“No more than a common criminal.” Her words echoed in his mind, but he pushed them away. Divisiveness would get them nowhere.

He kissed her hand. It would be a long day. They’d have to keep their spirits up.
